Immigration of small numbers of South Asians to England began with the arrival of the East India Company to the Indian subcontinent in the 17th century. Indians came to Britain, for educational or economic reasons, during the British Raj, with most returning to India after a few months or years, and in greater numbers as the Indian independence movement led to the partition of , eventually creating the separate countries of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.
The most significant wave of Asian immigration to and settlement in the United Kingdom came following World War II , with the resumed control of Hong Kong , the breakup of the British Empire and the independence of Pakistan, India, Sri Lanka and later Bangladesh, especially during the s and s. An influx of Asian immigrants also took place following the expulsion or flight of Indian communities then holders of British passports from the newly independent Uganda , Kenya and Tanzania in the early s.
This usage contrasts to that in the United States , where it is used primarily to refer to people of East Asian origin. The United Kingdom census was the first to include a question on ethnicity apart from in Northern Ireland, where the question was not asked until The question had tick-boxes for “Indian”, “Pakistani” and “Bangladeshi”. There was also a tick box, as well as a general “Any other ethnic group please describe ” option for those not wishing to identify with any of the pre-set tick boxes.
For the census , in England and Wales, “Indian”, “Pakistani” and “Bangladeshi” and “Any other Asian background please write in ” options were grouped under an “Asian or Asian British” heading, with appearing under a separate heading. In Scotland, all of these tick-boxes were grouped together under an “Asian, Asian Scottish or Asian British” heading, and in Northern Ireland no broad headings were used, just tick-boxes for each of the Asian groups.
Shown in order, as listed on the Census form, the five categories of Asian British are: . In the course of the s, usage of British Asian broadened in British media usage and in self-identification by British citizens or residents, to increasingly also include British people of heritage other than South Asia , such as East Asia and West Asia. Rowling ‘s fictional character Cho Chang , which is named after a common Chinese surname , as a British Asian character.
Hamed, of West Asian descent, specifically Yemeni , was listed alongside fellow Briton Amir Kahn of South Asian, Pakistani heritage as part of the “strong boxing pedigree in the British Asian community”.

With another Chinese New Year passed, the Chinese diaspora is once again highlighted with a sea of red celebrations across the UK. It reminded me that when I grew up – the notion of ‘who am I? I studied in various places in Europe, most of it in Milton Keynes and Bedford. I went to a school where I was one of the very few Chinese people there and I found myself really struggling with my identity.
That became stronger when other friends began to date; it was so hard to ask girls out because I felt so ‘different’ which for a teenager, really killed my confidence. I thought having smaller eyes and a Chinese face was a disadvantage. I had few role models to tell me otherwise. It didn’t help that between the age of 10 and 18 I didn’t go to Hong Kong, where I was born, once. I remember even being harassed by the National Front, chased by punks wearing medieval chainmail with signs saying ‘go back to China’.
I found the best way to escape my dilemma was to throw myself into sport, which didn’t distinguish success through appearances or background. I trained hard for a singular goal and hoped by the end I could prove to myself that I was a ‘somebody’ – and not some stereotype Jackie Chan or book nerd that the media likes to depicts us as. The by-products of training forged strong friendships through meritocracy and gave me a leadership position that grew my confidence.
Being the first Chinese Captain of Rowing and winning a national gold medal gave me a solid foundation but I still longed to understand my background.

Background and Rationale Workplace well-being is central to tackling the social determinants of health and addressing health inequalities. People spend substantial time at work and there is great potential for working conditions to affect their long-term physical and mental health.
Employers can benefit from effective workplace well-being in terms of increased productivity and reduced absenteeism. However, working conditions have worsened throughout the UK economy suggesting the need for public policy to intervene in order to create a better working environment with resulting benefits in terms of improvements in work output as well as in the physical and mental health of the working population. Little is known about workplace health in the context of ethnic minority businesses and even less on Chinese owned businesses.
Yet, the Chinese population is one of fastest growing ethnic minorities in the UK and Chinese businesses are likely to become a substantial asset to the UK economy. Against this background, this study explores the views and perceptions of Chinese employees and employers as well as opinion leaders on workplace well-being in the Chinese business community in London. The specific aims were to understand the context and approach to staff well-being within Chinese owned businesses based in London and to identify any potential levers, barriers and triggers for engaging Chinese led businesses in work place well-being initiatives.
